According to Wikipedia, Labor Day originated in 1882 as the Central Labor Union (of New York City) sought to create "a day off for the working citizens." Amen to that! As the last of the few lazy days of summer we'll have, I put together a "lazy" montage using Flickr photos and the keyword lazy. I know, crafty. =) Enjoy your day off!
Through blog link fate, I was led to Spoonflower, a site where you can upload your own designs and they digitally print limited quantities of that fabric. So cool! My interests in writing for a living have been waning over the past few months. It was a big reason why I put freelance writing for magazines on the back burner (and because working two jobs was getting to be more than I could handle). While I don't think I'm ready to become a fabric designer (one reason being Jess said it wasn't as easy as I'd like to think...boo!), I'd still like to pretend I was one. So yay, Spoonflower! I'm still trying to figure out how the whole thing works, but here are some pictures of other people's creative fabrics. What fun! See more here.
I'm not a fan of doing laundry. So when I saw this picture here on Etsy, I decided I'd like to get this owl as pet. He/she would be a welcome companion in my home!
I have a thing for funny skulls. Mainly I like the girly skulls with the bows on their heads. But, while looking for fabric on Etsy, I came across this. Hee-hee!
Here's my dilemma. I told you we sold our condo and are now living in an apartment. We couldn't find a house in time, so the apartment is a one-year (or possibly less) temporary thing. While I don't want to go nuts decorating or anything, I still want to be comfortable where I live and make it feel homey. At this point, I don't know how much is too much for a short-term space. We have blinds, but the place feels bare without curtains, especially since we have 10-foot ceilings. We're also finding that being on the first floor is an invasion of privacy, so curtains will help in that respect, too. So I think curtains are a must (but, dang I've got huge windows now to cover). If I put up new curtains, I think I want to go in a new color direction, which means a few new throw pillows and lamp shades, most of which I can make myself. Sounds like this could spiral out of control, but I'm going to do my best to keep my decorating to a minimum. Here's the direction I'm thinking for my space:
The couch is mine (ignore the burgundy stuff on the couch. I was too lazy to Photoshop the whole thing). The buffet is also mine (well, close to it). We use it for our TV. The big mural thingy is a decal from Etsy. Pretty cool...temporary, and easily movable. The pillow fabric is Amy Butler's August Fields. The curtains are from Target. I used red as an accent color, because I have a lot of red stuff from our old place to use in the kitchen and dining room, which is right next to the Living Room. Since the three rooms really are almost like one big room, I need something that works together.
That's it. I'm open to critiques and suggestions!
Yes, I have a bit of dark side. So while this may seem weird to some, it really isn't all that odd for Shane and me. We went for a bike ride the weekend before last, and stopped at this old cemetary. The headstones were so old that some were crumbling apart, and others just plain broke in half. I think most of the deceased were from the late 1800s. I was really moved by this place...creepy as that may seem to some.

Moving and summer had put crafting on the back burner, but I seem to be back in full (OK, partial at best) swing. I started knitting a sweater and after three attempts, I think I'm finally back in the groove. However, I'm pretty sure I'm going to run out of yarn. Let's hope they still have this color available.

Shane and I spent the weekend doing local things: Farmers' Market, a parade, and our town's festival. I thought I'd share some of the fun things we saw. Makes me sad that summer is so quickly coming to an end!
No PhotoShop tricks here. This guy was really playing the guitar while standing on his head. It earned my dollar!
At the festival, B's son Sam was the first to volunteer to break a board with his own fist. He busted it up on the first try!
This mask was handed out at the parade to advertise for the Cow Chip Contest coming up at the end of August. Moo to you!This lady was tearing it up at the Farmer's Market. She cracks me up...but not as much as she does Shane. This is sure to keep him busy at work this week. =)

I've been waiting to talk about Amy Butler's new line of home decor fabric, August Fields (the name just sounds pleasant, doesn't it?). I saw the fabric available on other sites and even on Etsy, but I kept checking Amy's site and never saw any mention. Wasn't sure what to think, but lo and behold, her site was recently updated with the beauteous fabrics. Mmm. I've been kind of leaning toward the Dew Drops palette to decorate my new rented living room. More to come on that later.

I'm always looking for new ways to knit scarves. And Lea Redmond has a few unique approaches that I stumbled across. I think I like the sky scarf the best.
How About Orange blogger Jessica Jones recently designed some ribbons for
J Caroline Creative (how do I get that gig?). I thought they were really cute and wanted to share. My fave is the airstream ribbon...probably because I could use a vacation!
