Opinion Time: Too Big, Right?

Furniture came today, and I think it's too big. Shane is sort of feeling the same way, but as the night goes on he said it's growing on him. We have 30 days to return it without any extra cost or loss of money, so I need some help. Should it stay or should it go? And if it goes, what should I do instead? I'm thinking just two chairs and a table or an ottoman now. Something like this. But I don't know. The room is so narrow. Ugh.

(Poor lil Dex. I woke him up from his night nap by turning all the lights on.)

Can you take one of the chairs and put it upstairs? Would that help? I'll reserve my final opinion until I see it in person on Monday.

We thought about that, but even the one chair with the couch feels too heavy in there (for me, anyway).

Yes, I'm glad you're coming over to see it in person!

You know it really depends on how you plan on using that room. Is it a room for just the two of you to enjoy the fire? Also are you cuddlers or do you prefer your own nice comfy chair right next to eachother?? It sure is gorgeous furniture!!

Yeah, I think it's the chairs that put it over the top. I can see why it would stress you out. I love the color though.

hey Carrie - I think the problem is definitely the "set". The pieces are each lovely but club-style furniture is usually - as you say - big. It feels like you need some space between the pieces, so whether that means removing the chairs or getting different ones, I'd try that. I think softening the look will also help them not feel so big (like all three pieces landed in your living room at once). Maybe a soft throw, warm pillows, and a side chair that's upholstered vs. leather might all help breathe a little space/air/lightness into the grouping. Personally I'd also experiment with other layouts just to see. Good luck ! Nice stuff though :)

I agree with everyone else--the chairs are the big trouble. I love the couch but the chairs feel like they suck up too much of the space from the photos you shared. I think something thinner and lighter feeling like the other chair post you linked to in combo with the heavier couch would be a nice mix. Nice that you get the 30 day policy for returns!

It looks like our living room! We went with a sofa, one club chair and a smaller upholstered chair to lighten up the room a bit. I like having 2 chairs for when we have company and the upholstered chair adds a little contrasting color. Can't wait to see it in person on Monday!

Oh, I'd get rid of the sofa! And go with chairs and a table. You have your family room for sofa time, plus (maybe it's just me) if there's a fire going, I'm always on the hearth, or on the floor just in front. Never as far as a sofa away! Can you do something in the corner with a third chair that can be turned both ways if you want to use it?

I think your instinct is right that the three pieces together are too big. I wonder if a loveseat plus 2 smaller upholstered chairs would work? I also like your inspiration photo of two chairs, maybe with an ottoman. Some pattern for contrast would look great would your wall color! Those smaller chairs we were looking at on the Pier 1 site were a nice size. And, um, coincidentally, I'm selling my small reddish pattern upholstered chair, if that happens to be your style! :-)

I think the scale of each piece is too large for that room. That their overstuffed look makes the room actually look smaller. But that's just my opinion!

Buying furniture is difficult. I've had multiple friends buy a sofa only to get it home to find it is too large for the room. We got exact measurments then laid out tape on the floor to see exactly how much space our potential furniture would take up. It really helped us imagine what size would work for us.

Good luck if you decide to find something different!
